Blue Mountain Arbor was founded by Derrick Lawson, a lifelong Shenandoah Valley resident and Eastern Orthodox Christian, during a season of uncertainty. After unexpectedly losing his job, Derrick found himself with no clear plan — only the resolve to work honestly, serve others, and trust God with what came next. What began as a short-term effort to make it “just one more month” grew, by the grace of God, into a thriving business.

This company exists because of a deep belief in loving one’s neighbor and stewarding what has been entrusted to us. Derrick views Blue Mountain Arbor not as something he owns, but something he has been given to oversee — a responsibility to serve clients well, care for their land, and operate with humility and purpose. As we say in the Orthodox tradition: Glory to God for all things.

With more than a decade of professional arboriculture experience and a family history in Appalachian forestry spanning six generations, Derrick brings a deep understanding of tree biology, local species, and long-term landscape health. This background allows Blue Mountain Arbor to approach every project with wisdom, restraint, and respect — because not every tree needs to be cut down.
